Biography

St George junior spent the 1966 season playing with Wollongong Norths before joining Easts. In 1970 an injury-ridden Australian side turned to the reliable goal-kicker to fill the vacant fullback position for the deciding Third Test against Great Britain. McKean responded with seven magnificent goals but the match, and the Ashes, was ultimately lost, 21-17. In 1972 he was the season's leading point-scorer with 194pts (7t, 86g, 1fg) and was a member of Easts' grand final team that lost to Manly that year after kicking the Roosters into the grand final in the tryless final win against St George. McKean returned to St George to see out the final years of his career.

Saw him score and unbelievable try at the old Sports Ground against Wests - started his run after receiving the ball deep in his own half and then side-stepped the entire West side to score. Played for Australia against the poms when and old man Dennis Hartley terrorised our pack - just missed out on kicking Australia to victory - a very reliable goal kicker, fullback and exciting side-stepping runner of the ball.

I was at Kogarah intermediate high school when Alan was there. He had a fabulous side step and a great goalkicker. John Tapp, the legendary race caller was also there at that time.

To this day 55 years ago his try against Wests that Sunday is still the best individual try I’ve seen in Rugby League. I still speak about it to this day and about how lucky I was to be there.

Still the scorer of probably the best individual try in Ist Grade history.. I was on halfway in the stand on Moore Park Rd side and could not believe how many players he sidestepped, basically the whole Wests team.
